Science
Common Unit
Unit Description
Semester 1 in Year 7 Science is an introduction to the nature of science and scientific research leading into an investigation of the properties of matter and mixtures, and the principles that guide the separation of substances in nature and industry. In Semester 2, an investigation of the diversity of life on Earth and the relationships between living things and their environment is linked to the Year 7 Environment Camp in Term 3. In Term 4 the students undertake study of forces and the operation of simple machines as force multipliers. They then apply their knowledge gained in a practical STEM based activity where they construct a model electric car complete with working gear box. Scientific literacy and the essential skills of scientific research including experimental design, the collection and analysis of data, and science communication are emphasised throughout. Collaborative and independent inquiry-based learning foster curiosity, critical and creative thinking and the capacity to work effectively as part of a team.
