Integrated Studies

Year Level Description

Integrated curriculum and inquiry develop the Year 2 student's skills across a number of subject areas - Health, History and Science.

By the end of the year students are expected to:

  • participate in discussions on a topic by formulating questions and talking about the topic;
  • gather information on a topic from a variety of sources;
  • use simple data charts to record and retrieve information;
  • use simple statements and drawings to report on observations;
  • use gathered information to answer questions;
  • form conclusions based on observations;
  • represent information in a variety of ways.

Health Education

The major focus for Year 2 is to ensure that students develop as people who take increasing responsibility for their own physical wellbeing, learning, relationships with others, and their role in the local, national and global community. They describe what they like about themselves, how they are similar to others and how they are unique. They begin to identify the benefits of safe behaviours and learn how they can protect and increase their health and safety and the health and safety of others.

With guidance, they learn to make healthy food choices according to healthy eating models and to consider the factors that influence their choice of foods. They begin to recognise the importance of variety and frequency of food consumption for an active and healthy life.

By the end of the year students are expected to:

  • discuss the way various situations and behaviours affect the way they feel;
  • develop personal responses to unsafe behaviours and situations;
  • gain an understanding of how to make healthy food choices according to healthy eating models. 


The Year 2 curriculum provides a study of local history. Students explore, recognise and appreciate the history of their local area, particularly Carey, by examining the remains of the past and considering why they should be preserved.

By the end of the year students are expected to:

  • explore the history of a significant person, building, site or part of the natural environment in the local community and what it reveals about the past; 
  • investigate the impact of changing technology on people’s lives (at home and in the ways they worked, travelled, communicated, and played in the past); 
  • sequence familiar objects and events; 
  • distinguish between the past, present and future;
  • pose questions about the past using sources provided. 




In this stage of schooling the students’ explorations are precursors to more structured inquiry in later levels. Students use their senses to observe and gather information, describing, making comparisons, sorting and classifying to create an order that is meaningful. They observe and explore changes that vary in their rate and magnitude. The student’s questions and ideas about the world become increasingly purposeful. They are encouraged to develop explanatory ideas and test them through further exploration.

By the end of the year students are expected to:

  • recognise that different materials can be combined, including by mixing, for a particular purpose; 
  • understand that science involves asking questions about, and describing changes in, objects and events;
  • respond to and pose questions, and make predictions about familiar objects and events;
  • participate in different types of guided investigations to explore and answer questions, such as manipulating materials, testing ideas, and accessing information sources;
  • use informal measurements in the collection and recording of observations, with the assistance of digital technologies as appropriate; 
  • use a range of methods to sort information, including drawings and provided tables; 
  • through discussion, compare observations with predictions; 
  • compare observations with those of others;
  • represent and communicate observations and ideas in a variety of ways such as oral and written language, drawing and role play.
