Year 2 Art


Year Level Description

Students make informed choices about using materials effectively, visual art elements and principles, skills, techniques and processes in making and presenting visual artwork. Every student is encouraged to explore each of the art forms: drawing, painting, collage, printmaking, mixed media, design, construction, ceramics and computer technology.

Students also develop their understanding of the art elements of line, shape, colour, form and texture within each art form. This is supported by the use and exploration of a range of art principles such as balance, repetition, pattern, movement, space, variety, proportion, harmony, unity and contrast. Students are encouraged to understand and start to identify some visual artwork from the past and present. All students actively participate in collaborative projects both within their year level and across the campus. 

Two-dimensional Art Practice

Drawing — students extend their drawing skills, building on the principles of line, pattern and shape. They are introduced to the use of expression through texture and colour, studying the effect of warm and cool colours and creating shades of varying colour in their work. They experiment with a broad range of drawing mediums and explore transferring their drawings into digital images.

Printmaking — students explore both relief printing and mono prints. They specifically experiment with texture and colour throughout their work. There is also a focus on pattern making and the art of weaving colour to create rhythm within an artwork.

Three-dimensional Art Practice

Ceramics — students at this level explore the modelling and textual qualities of clay and produce both an individual and collaborative outcome. They are introduced to the slab technique and use decorative methods such as using the clay as a drawing surface, adding oxide decoration after the firing process and using their work as a functional piece. They extend their knowledge of the relief technique by developing a ceramic work based on the addition of clay layers to form a moulded work.

Achievement Standard

By the end of the year students are expected to:

  • use lines to create shapes, patterns and a variety of textures;
  • use different types of line to create emotional/expressive qualities;
  • understand how colour can be used to express mood, emotion and atmosphere;
  • understand that lines and shapes can be repeated to create movement;
  • understand and use more complex clay joining and hollowing techniques;
  • distinguish and compare hand-building tools and techniques;
  • understand and use basic weaving techniques;
  • use running stitch on textiles;
  • use one-point perspective to create depth;
  • identify, create and use secondary, tertiary and mono-chromatic colours.
